WHAT DOES LOLER MEAN AND WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

HOW DOES LOLER APPLY TO THE CARE INDUSTRY?

Although LOLER can be applied to a wide range of equipment, it has great relevance to lifting aids for the medical and care industry. It can provide essential information and guidance on the correct way to maintain and use hoists, lifts and their accessories, helping to protect both the carer and the user.

LOLER requirements are relevant for patient handling equipment that has the principle function of lifting. Some examples are:

WHAT LOLER REQUIREMENTS ARE RELEVANT TO MY EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES?

LOLER requirements clearly state that it is the responsibility of both the owner and the operator to ensure the apparatus is safe and up to date with all maintenance, inspections and testing.

It requires the lifting equipment to be suitable for its purpose, with enough strength and stability to effectively manage any strain that it’s placed under. It should clearly state the maximum load, as this is an important part of ensuring the continued performance of the hoist. It should also be up to date with all relevant LOLER testing.

WHAT IS LOLER TESTING?

LOLER testing is designed to make sure your equipment is compliant and safe for its intended use. You should organise the testing of any lifting equipment on a regular basis by a competent person.

This person should have a comprehensive knowledge of the equipment, and they should also be fully trained and LOLER certified. They should be called upon to perform LOLER testing:

  • Before its initial use at each location
  • After the hoist has been assembled
  • Every 6 months, unless stated otherwise by the hoist’s examination scheme
